Today, I want to share with you about my favourite Bible version—the New Living Translation (NLT). The reason I love this version is because of how easy it makes it to read the Bible. I enjoy reading and exploring different versions, but I always find myself coming back to the NLT. It helps me engage with the Word of God in a way that’s clear, simple, and enjoyable.
Our bishop loves the NIV and the SUV (Swahili translation), while our pastor favours the KJV. That’s okay. For me, I chose the NLT because I found it easier to understand and more accessible for daily reading. It’s a version I can turn to anytime, and it keeps me excited about reading the Bible regularly. I do challenge myself to read different versions each year, but the NLT remains my all-time favourite.
My order of favourite versions is as follows: NLT comes first because of its ease of reading. Then I love the NIV for its accuracy, followed by the NKJV, which I enjoy because it’s a simpler version of the KJV. The GNT is next, and I appreciate it for its simplicity. Finally, I love the Amplified Bible for its richness in translation. It doesn’t leave anything out and gives deeper understanding with its expanded meanings.
I’ve read the Bible in other versions, and each one brings out different revelations. However, to keep up with my love for reading, the NLT is my primary version. The NIV comes second, followed by the NKJV, GNT, and then the Amplified Bible.
When choosing a translation, I’m also mindful of certain details. For example, in Genesis 3, when God tells the serpent that the woman’s seed will crush its head, I look for the word “Seed” with a capital “S.” If a version doesn’t capitalise it, I question the translation’s accuracy. It’s small details like this that help me ensure the version aligns with what I believe to be accurate.
That said, I don’t believe one version is superior to another. It all depends on how you love to hear God speak to you. Whether it’s in Kikuyu, the King James Version (KJV) with its “thee” and “thou,” or the New Living Translation, each version offers a unique way to encounter God’s Word. The purpose of reading the Bible is to hear from God, and you should read it in a version that helps you connect with Him in the way that resonates most with you.
As we start the new year, I want to challenge you to read through the entire Bible this year. Let God reveal His secrets to you through His Word. The more you read, the more He will speak to you. So, if you’re up for it, I challenge you to read the entire Bible this coming year and see what God will reveal to you. Make it a habit to read the Bible every year. Your relationship with Christ will be transformed forever.
