The Dangers of Foolish Company

Posted on July 4, 2024 by Kate

Proverbs 24:7 reminds us that “Wisdom is too much for fools! Their advice is no good” (CEV). This verse carries deep meaning, but to truly understand it, we must first reflect on what the Bible calls a “fool.” The fool, according to scripture, is someone who rejects wisdom, refuses correction, and ultimately walks in the way of destruction.

In Psalms 1:1, we are warned not to “follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers” (NLT). God knows that when you surround yourself with fools, you will not gain anything good. Instead, you risk being led astray, taking their foolish words as truth, and falling into their destructive ways.

It is heartbreaking to watch someone with great potential waste their life because they choose to listen to the advice of fools. When they take the foolishness they hear as solid truth, they end up sitting in the company of the wicked. The influence of fools drags them down, diverting them from the path of wisdom and leading them into darkness.

We are called to seek wisdom from God and surround ourselves with people who encourage us toward righteousness. Proverbs 13:20 NLT tells us, “Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.” True wisdom comes from aligning ourselves with God’s word and seeking the company of those who walk in His truth.
