Safety Changes Everything

Posted on April 11, 2025 by Kate

When you feel safe, your heart stops shaking.

There’s a version of me that existed only in survival. She knew how to anticipate everyone’s needs. She knew how to smile through discomfort. She knew how to keep the peace, even when everything inside her was screaming. That version of me was sharp, careful, tired.

But something shifts the first time you feel truly safe. Not just physically, but emotionally. Safe to say no without being punished. Safe to say yes without being taken advantage of. Safe to speak, cry, ask, rest, just be—without fear.

Safety is the foundation that softness grows from. And so many of us never had that. We became strong too early. We became “mature for our age” because we had no other option. We learned to protect ourselves, and we did it well. But under all that protection was a girl who just wanted to feel held.

And now—if you’re healing—you might be meeting that version of yourself again. The one who’s slowly learning it’s okay to exhale. The one who’s realizing that real safety doesn’t control you; it sees you, listens to you, honours you. It doesn’t demand performance. It welcomes your truth.

I didn’t know how much I needed safety until I had a taste of it.

And now I crave it—not just from others, but from myself.

To speak gently to myself. To stop pushing when I’m already tired. To let my heart rest instead of making it keep running. Because when I feel safe, my whole being starts to soften.

And when my heart softens, it finally gets to beat in peace.
