I Can Make Space for Joy—Even If I’m Still Hurting

Posted on May 21, 2026 by Kate

Joy and pain can live in the same body. And yours is proof of that.

Some days, healing feels like grieving what was lost. Other days, it’s as simple as laughing at a meme or smiling at the sun. You might feel guilty when those lighter moments show up—as if you’re betraying your pain, as if joy means you’re “over it.” But you’re not betraying anything. You’re simply making space for life again.

You’re not waiting for pain to disappear before you let something good in. You’re not putting your happiness on hold until you’re fully “fixed.” Healing isn’t a before-and-after. It’s a series of moments—hard ones, soft ones, silent ones, joyful ones—all happening at the same time.

So today, let yourself laugh even if you cried this morning. Let yourself dance to a song that makes your shoulders loosen. Let yourself enjoy your child’s giggle, a sweet text, or your favorite snack. That’s not denial. That’s resilience. That’s capacity.

You’re not abandoning your healing by feeling joy. You’re actually deepening it.

Your nervous system learns safety not only through what you survive, but through what you enjoy. Joy is not a reward for getting through the dark. It’s part of what keeps you alive in it.

And you’re allowed to have both.
