That you’re quieter now. Softer in some places, but sharper in others. What they don’t see is why.

It’s not that you’ve hardened. It’s that life taught you to guard your tenderness.

There were times you showed up fully, with your heart wide open, only to be met with dismissal, betrayal, or indifference. You weren’t born with walls. You built them because your softness kept getting wounded. And even though you still long to love fully, to be open and warm and deeply connected, you now carry the memory of what it cost you the last time.

So no—it’s not coldness. It’s protection. It’s wisdom born of pain.

Healing doesn’t mean you go back to who you were before the world disappointed you. It means you learn how to honour your boundaries while still staying true to your essence. You begin to trust yourself to decide who gets access to your softness—and who doesn’t.

That’s the difference between being hardened and being guarded. One is a shutting down. The other is a quiet reclaiming of your worth.

And I think there’s something incredibly beautiful about that. You’re still loving. Still kind. Still human. You’ve just learned to carry your tenderness more carefully—and there’s no shame in that.

People often say, “You’ve changed,” when they notice that you don’t open up as easily anymore.
