The Trap of Trying to Be Good

Posted on December 2, 2025 by Kate

There’s a strange thing that happens when we try too hard to be good—it almost always backfires. The more we try to act without greed or fear, the more we notice that our motives are still tangled up in both. We tell ourselves we’re being selfless, but deep down, there’s often a quiet voice hoping to be seen that way. It’s unsettling to realize that even our noblest actions can have traces of pride hiding underneath.

This is what saints throughout history meant when they called themselves sinners. It wasn’t false modesty—it was clarity. They saw that their desire to be pure, to love perfectly, to rise above selfishness, was itself another form of pride. A spiritual competition. “Look how humble I am.” “Look how detached I’ve become.” And soon, humility becomes its own trophy.

It’s a loop that never ends. The mind keeps finding new ways to measure itself, to stay a little more aware, a little more awakened, a little more morally refined than everyone else. Even when we see through the trick, that insight itself becomes another point of pride: I see my ego more clearly than you do.

It’s exhausting, this constant self-comparison—this quiet need to be the most selfless, the most aware, the most evolved person in the room. It’s like playing a game that has no finish line. Every time you think you’ve stepped outside of it, you’ve actually just moved to a higher level of the same game.

Maybe the way out isn’t through trying harder to be good, but through relaxing our grip on goodness itself. Letting things be a little messy. Letting motives be mixed. Admitting that we want love and safety and recognition, and that this doesn’t make us bad—it makes us human.

When we stop chasing purity, something honest begins to appear. Not sainthood, not moral perfection, just a quieter, truer way of being. We start to act kindly not because we want to be seen as kind, but because we’ve dropped the performance and returned to something simple—life lived without the scoreboard.
