Parenting: Growing Beside Them

Posted on October 25, 2025 by Kate

No one tells you how parenting will stretch you — not just in your time, your patience, your energy — but in your identity. In the quiet moments, I’ve realized I’m not just raising a child. I’m also raising myself, again. Not to be perfect, but to be more present, more aware, more honest.

When I became a parent, I thought the job was to teach. To guide. To lead. And yes, those things matter. But so often, I’ve found that my child has been the one showing me the way. Back to wonder. Back to curiosity. Back to softness I thought I had to bury to survive.

There are days when I get it wrong. When I’m short-tempered. Distracted. Overwhelmed. And in those moments, the guilt creeps in. But parenting — like nature — is about seasons. Not every day is bright and full of blooms. Some days are winter days. Bare, raw, quiet. And that’s okay.

I remind myself that even trees rest. Even seeds take time in the dark before they push toward the sun. I don’t have to be “on” all the time to be a good mother. I just have to keep showing up. Gently. Honestly. Willing to grow.

I no longer aim for control. I aim for connection. I want my child to feel safe with me — not because I always have the answers, but because I’m always willing to listen. To repair when I mess up. To love without conditions. To let them be their whole, messy, evolving self.

There’s no blueprint for parenting. But there is something steady about coming back to what matters: kindness over perfection. Presence over performance. Truth over pretending.

In the quietest moments — brushing their hair, folding their clothes, listening to a story they’ve told ten times — I feel it: I’m not shaping them into who I think they should be. I’m walking beside them as they discover it for themselves.

And maybe that’s the heart of it: parenting isn’t about molding. It’s about tending. Like a gardener who knows the flower won’t bloom overnight — but trusts the process anyway.

We’re growing together. Day by day.
