My Story Isn’t Shameful. It’s Proof That I Survived.

Posted on June 21, 2025 by Kate

So many of us carry around parts of our past like they’re something to hide. We try to cover up the messy chapters—the ones with heartbreak, abuse, trauma, mistakes, or things we were forced into. The shame creeps in when we think we’re “less than” because of what happened. But that shame isn’t the truth. It’s a weight someone else handed you.

What is true is this: you’re still here. Whatever tried to silence you, crush you, or make you feel like you didn’t matter… it didn’t win. You survived. And that’s not shameful—it’s powerful.

Every scar, every memory, every dark season you walked through is not a reason to feel embarrassed. It’s evidence of strength. It means you kept going. You adapted. You made decisions with the knowledge and safety you had at the time. You protected yourself the best way you knew how.

The world may have told you to hide parts of your story. To make yourself smaller. But you don’t have to do that anymore. You’re not broken for having been hurt. You’re not weak for needing time to heal. You’re not wrong for remembering what happened and wanting better for yourself.

Your story is yours. And it deserves to be honoured, not buried.

You don’t owe it to everyone—but you do owe yourself the chance to live without shame. You can choose to tell it with gentleness. You can also choose to keep parts sacred. But what you don’t have to do is pretend it didn’t shape you.

There’s nothing shameful about surviving.

Your story, in all its truth, is the beginning of your power.
