Living Through Love: God, Yourself, and Others

Posted on June 3, 2024 by Kate

Luke 10:27-28 reminds us of the two greatest commandments: loving God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind, and loving our neighbour as ourselves. The first part—loving God—is often straightforward for many of us. However, the second part, “Love your neighbour as yourself,” can be more challenging to live out.

Loving your neighbour as yourself means that if you wouldn’t want something done to you, then you shouldn’t do it to someone else. It’s as simple as treating others with the same respect, kindness, and consideration that you would want for yourself. Jesus teaches that if we follow these two commandments, we will live: “Do this and you will live” (Luke 10:28).

When we don’t love God, we are separated from Him, which is a form of spiritual death. Likewise, when we act with malice or selfishness toward others, we also destroy a part of ourselves, as hate or neglect kills the joy and peace within us. Proverbs 14:30 reminds us that “A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones.” By harming others, we only bring harm to ourselves.

Immaturity often leads to a mindset of “tit for tat,” where people retaliate when they feel wronged. This attitude contradicts Jesus’ call for grace and maturity in our relationships. Romans 12:17 says, “Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable.” True believers are called to rise above petty revenge and instead seek to do good to others, even when it is difficult.

Let us strive to honour God by loving Him fully and by treating others as we would want to be treated. This is the path to true life and peace. Have a beautiful day.
